Selon l’étude annuelle de la Banque Nationale de Belgique analysant l’année 2011, le complexe portuaire liégeois est créateur de valeur ajoutée. Elle est estimée à 2.921,7 millions d’euros par an. Ceci représente 3,3 % du PIB de la Wallonie et 0,8 % du PIB de la Belgique.
Malgré une période de conjoncture économique difficile, le tonnage de marchandises manutentionné par les entreprises situées sur les terrains du Port autonome de Liège se maintient en affichant un trafic global (eau-rail-route) de 19.307.453 tonnes.
Le 21 juin 1937 est officiellement créé, sous le nom de Port autonome de Liège, un établissement public de l’Etat,chargé de gérer les diverses installations portuaires publiques de la région liégeoise utilisées par la navigation de commerce. Il célèbre cette année son septante-cinquième anniversaire
