Raising bridges on the Albert Canal - a strategic challenge!
The bridges at Lixhe, Haccourt and Hermalle will be raised to allow the passage of ships carrying four layers of containers, and improvements are also planned for the bridge at Lanaye. This modernisation will facilitate access to the Liège Trilogiport platform and the Chertal industrial site, thereby strengthening the region's competitiveness.
This is a major strategic challenge for the Liege region and Wallonia, as it strengthens the Liege Port Authority as an essential partner of the Antwerp-Bruges ports. With the recent extension of Liège's Trilogiport container terminal and these works, container transport by waterway is becoming more competitive, which contributes to the region's economic development.
These developments will help to make the waterways more attractive. The aim is to reduce the number of HGVs on regional roads and to enable companies in Liège and Wallonia to opt for river transport and to have a genuine alternative to road transport for their goods from Liège Trilogiport. A key project for reducing CO₂ emissions.
These works strengthen our attractiveness and competitiveness and contribute to a more sustainable future for transport in Liège and Wallonia.
The work will start in spring 2025 and should be completed by June 2026.
