Multimodal strategy

Multimodality refers to the presence on the same site of several different modes of transport: it combines the waterway, rail and road; which is what makes it so valuable.

The Port of Liege is:

33 port areas located along the Meuse and the Albert Canal in the Province of Liege,
nearly 400 hectares of port land made available to companies,

4 multimodal terminals with direct river connections to Antwerp-Bruges (14hrs sailing time) and Rotterdam (24hrs sailing time), and rail connections to Europe and China,
More than 300,000m² of operational logistics warehouses at Liege Trilogiport.

River network: inland rivers

The Port of Liege is directly connected:

to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges (129 km) via the Albert Canal (14 hours' navigation);
to the Port of Rotterdam (250 km) via the Albert Canal or the Juliana Canal and the Meuse (20 hours' navigation);
to the entire European river network (Scheldt, Rhine, Main, Danube, Mittellandkänal,...).

Railway network

Thanks to multimodality, the Port of Liege is committed to meeting the challenges of decarbonising the transport sector, which is at the heart of Walloon and European concerns.

Since 2022, the Liege Port Authority has invested, with the help of Wallonia and the European Union, more than €15 million to strengthen complementarities between freight transport modes and improve its existing infrastructure.

Road network

The Port Autonome de Liege is investing in order to strengthen and improve the existing port infrastructures in Liege with the ambition of promoting multimodality.

These investments include:

the extension of Liege's Trilogiport container terminal,
the construction of new berthing infrastructure at Hermalle-sous-Huy,
the extension of the Yacht Harbour as well as the development of a new yachting area at Coronmeuse,
the redevelopment as a bimodal zone (linked to road and rail) of the site of the former marshalling yard at the Port de Monsin, which will enable rail traffic to be stepped up)
