River transport : an environmentally-friendly system of transport!

One of the tasks of the Liege Port Authority is to promote river transport, an ecologically-sound means of transport, by helping to increase the use of ports, improving their facilities and managing them effectively.

As a result of the increased concern about the environment, more and more focus on sustainable development and the question of what to do about our congested road network, businesses are increasing turning to other goods transport systems. River transport is making its mark in this development.

The leading Belgian inland port, the Liege Port Authority is a key sustainable development player in the diurnal round. River transport has several advantages over other goods transport systems. It offers:

  • a safe and reliable environment: the risks of accidents are extremely low. They can be counted on for their delivery times.
  • an environmentally-friendly solution: this means of transport is kind to the earth. A fully-laden vessel weighing 1,350 tonnes when sailing is equal to 40 or so less lorries on our roads!
  • lastly, a competitive, money-saving solution: this low-energy option can be used to carry huge tonnages – a low polluting bulk transport facility.
